Culture shock eased at KCC

Many cultures are represented at Kirkwood Community College. Some of these include Russian, French, Chinese, Hispanic and American.
With more than 500 students representing over 90 countries outside the United States, the International Studies Department continues to grow. International Studies Adviser Gayle Glick has become a supportive figure for international students.
"The International Student Department is a home for these students to come and receive advice and support.," Glick stated.
Students can come to the international Studies Department for general information to further their knowledge and have their questions answered.
Glick said that international students have many of the same classes as U.S. students. The international students take a placement test for English. This test puts them in the appropriate classes that would be most beneficial.
According to Glick, many of the international study business and engineering. From the many of areas of study, business has been the most common field of study.
After attending Kirkwood some students then transfer to a four-year college or university to continue their education. According to usastudyguide.com, international students comprise approximately 4 percent of the total undergraduate U.S. university and college population.
"The best part of advising in the International Studies Department is meeting the young men and women and helping to make a difference," Glick commented.
Students from outside the United States learn of Kirkwood via the Internet or even hearing it from a graduate of Kirkwood. "The most common way for them to learn about Kirkwood is using the Internet. Students in this age group are savvy on the Web and it is very easy for them to use," explained Glick.
