The presidential election may seem far away but with campaigns running on what seems like every television channel it's hard to not think about it.
With George W. Bush completing his second term, it is time for new candidates to step up. For the first time the United States has a woman and an African American running for the Democratic nomination at the same time.
Fox News reported that New York's top two contenders are Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. At Kirkwood's recent Movin' and Shakin' Nancy Sauerman, adviser of the Kirkwood Democrats, conducted a Straw Poll. The results put Barack Obama on top. Other top Democratic candidates include Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, and John Edwards. Top Republicans included Mitt Romney, John McCain and Sam Brownback.
"I'm excited because this will be my first election that I can vote in. I think we need a woman in charge, so I'll be voting for Hillary," said Laci Jenkins Crockett, a Human Services major.
Students interested in joining the Kirkwood Democrats should contact Sauerman at 398-5899 (extension 5706) and those interested in becoming part of the Kirkwood Republicans should contact Lee Belfield at 398-5899 (extension 1088).
