Kirkwood Community College is a diverse campus when one considers the variety of religion courses offered. The college offers courses on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Faith-based organizations are also available on campus.

Professor Peter Jauhiainen has been teaching religion classes for 15 years. According to Jauhiainen, the three major world religions are Christianity, Islam and Buddhism.

The most prevalent student religion at KCC is Christianity according to Jauhiainen. There have also been a handful of Jewish, Hindu and Baha'i students who have attended Kirkwood, he added.

Jauhiainen said most of the Christian students are Catholic and the second largest Christian denomination is Protestant, "Although Protestants are divided into numerous denominations."

Nursing major Jen Reisner said, "You don't have to go to church to believe in God."

English Language Acquisition Program Coordinator Catherine Schaff-Stump stated that many Kirkwood students don't belong to a certain religious sect. She said Agnostics and Atheists are the second largest group at KCC.

There are many faith-based organizations available to Kirkwood students including Kirkwood For Christ and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

Recreation and Housing Services Director and FCA Adviser Josh Troutman said, "The group meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in room 344 Linn Hall."

Troutman said members don't have to be athletes in order to take part in the meetings. Meetings often include fun activities and games but are mostly centered on Bible study.
