Students who want a four-year education with the comforts of a smaller environment may be interested in a collaboration between Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa called the 2 Plus 2 Guaranteed Graduation Plan.
This fall semester is the official inception of this new program but prior to this, Kirkwood and the U of I had a joint admissions plan that was similar but less structured. "Kirkwood was part of the pilot program launched in November 2006," said Sara Langenberg, associate editor of admissions at Iowa.
Advising and Transfer Center Coordinator Laura Riley explained, "It's the same principle but the 2 Plus 2 guarantees graduation in four years and before, that didn't always happen."
According to the University of Iowa Web site, the program sets specific goals for graduating from Kirkwood in the first two years with the last two at U of I.
Kirkwood students have access to advisers at both schools, as well as a U of I student ID card, access to the U of I library, career planning services and student ticket prices for campus events. When transferring, 2 Plus 2 students are also guaranteed early registration for the first semester at Iowa and will transfer into either the College of Liberal Arts or the Tippie College of Business.
Langenberg stated, "As of today, 63 Kirkwood students have signed up to participate in the 2 Plus 2 plan. However, the plan still is in its infancy so the number of participating Kirkwood students is actually kind of small compared to our overall transfer population from Kirkwood. In the fall of 2006 about 290 transfer students from Kirkwood were enrolled at Iowa and we expect the number of Kirkwood students in the 2 Plus 2 program to grow."
The 2 Plus 2 plan requires participants to meet certain requirements in order to join and also meet ongoing checkpoints to remain in the plan. There is no additional cost to participate in the plan and those interested in joining still have time to enroll but must sign up before beginning their second year at KCC. "You can never start planning too early," added Riley.
The first 2 Plus 2 transfer student will be this spring and the first Kirkwood student in the plan will arrive for the summer session of 2008. Starting this spring, incoming 2 Plus 2 transfer students will be eligible for the new 2 Plus 2 Transfer Scholarship. Up to 25 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to those with the highest grade-point averages. The scholarships may be renewed one year if checkpoints for majors are met.
"Iowa is the number one preference of (Kirkwood) students wanting to transfer," said Riley.
She stressed, "It's real important for students to realize that this is not the only way to transfer; only certain majors apply. Everyone can have the same experience whether they're in 2 Plus 2 or not. It all begins by stopping in here [advising office] to talk to us."
The advising and transfer center is located in room 108 Iowa Hall and is open to all students.

Are there any specific programs which are not allowed in the 2 plus 2?

Hi Sara. Check our web site at www.uiowa.edu/2plus2/ for a list of the degree programs that ARE included in 2 Plus 2, but if you don't see your major there, you should still contact an advisor at Iowa or KCC. (Continued…)
