Gaining popularity with Kirkwood Community College students, disc golf is said to be fun and relaxing by those who play.

Returning Kirkwood student Payton Raynolds said, "I go disc golfing twice a week in the summer. It is relaxing and I enjoy being outside and hanging out with friends."

Disc golf is similar to regular golf except that players don't use clubs to hit balls they simply use Frisbees. The object of the game is to land a disc into a basket in the least number of throws. The holes range from 150 to 700 feet long and from three to five for par. A disc golf course usually has nine, 18 or 24 holes.

Cedar Rapids has three different courses. Jones Park is the closest to the Kirkwood campus, located off Bowling Street. It consists of 18 holes and the course is open with minimum water hazards and trees.

Shaver Park is located just off I-380 on Wenig Road. It has 18 holes and is played mostly through thick trees.

Legion Disc Golf Course is located in Thomas Park at the intersection of First Avenue and Blairs Ferry Road. It has 24 holes and is played half in the open and the other half in the trees.

Nick Kettmann, a returning Kirkwood student and Elementary Education major, stated, "It's peaceful to get out in nature and playing disc golf is fun and challenging."

The Kirkwood Rec Center offers disc golf as an intramural in the spring. According to Josh Troutman, recreation and housing services director, the Rec Center only sets up the intramural if enough students are interested in participating. Troutman said he urges students to show interest as soon as the list for spring intramurals is available.

Tournaments are also held across the state at disc golf courses. One association that hosts tournaments is Ace Hunt. Developed in 2004, Ace Hunt was created by Lance Hanson. Hanson said the participants of tournaments usually range from 6 to 60 years old. They hold novice and amateur tournaments usually once a month throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
