There are many reasons why autumn may be considered the best season of the year. Some appreciate the season because of holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving or just a break from Iowa's scorching summer heat. However, sports fans know that with the changing of the leaves comes the start of football season.

Tailgating and watching Monday Night Football with friends are part of the treasured football season. However, to some Kirkwood Community College students fall means the start to the 7-on-7 intramural flag football season.

Kirkwood's intramural flag football season started on Sept. 17 at the soccer fields east of the baseball field. According to Recreation and Housing Services Director Josh Troutman, 7-on-7 flag football remains Kirkwood's most popular intramural sport.

In addition to flag football, Kirkwood offers many more intramurals options. " I was surprised with how many intramural sports I had to choose from," said Criminal Justice major Travis Hoyle.

Kirkwood students had the opportunity to compete in the co-ed 6-on-6 volleyball event and there was even a Texas Hold'em Poker tournament on Sept. 19. There has also been talk of a 3-point shooting contest and a golf league. According to Troutman, students are always welcome to suggest new events and leagues.

Students who missed signing up for flag football and volleyball still have time to sign up for events like men's and women's dodge ball league, a co-ed 5-on-5 basketball league and a men's and women's ping pong tournament. All of these events will be held in the Rec Center located on the north edge of campus.

Troutman said he encourages students to visit the Rec Center to pick up registration forms and obtain additional information. Students may also learn details of upcoming intramural events by calling the Rec Center at 398-5596 or by checking out the intramural link at www.kirkwood.edu.
