Whether you're looking for a job, a career or an after school activity the Career Fair on Nov. 13 is an opportunity to let the employers come to you. The Career Fair will be held from 10:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in Iowa Hall.

"We wanted to make sure that the Career Fair was during an activity hour so that it could really be geared for students but it is open to the whole community," said Dr. Clay Farebrother, career services coordinator. "Our mission would be to guide our students, alumni and anyone in the community from being unemployed or laid-off to employed."

As the word about Kirkwood students gets around to potential employers the Career Fair participation has grown. "I had several companies contact me and want to come out. Then keeping them in mind I sent out word to some other select employers. There was a lot of interest in coming," said Farebrother.

The employers planning to attend the Career Fair increased from 12 last year to 62 this year. "I have not heard any employer say one negative thing about Kirkwood students and how we teach them and what they are learning," said Farebrother. "All of the employers are excited to be out here and the key element is having the student response."

The advantages of looking for a job at a career fair are numerous. A career fair will produce quicker results for the job seeking student, it provides jobs ready-made for students and it allows for networking. "The career fair means the employers that are going are looking for immediate employees. The turnover rate is much quicker for the hiring process," said Farebrother.

"Employers come having jobs ready for students. They have flexible hours and second shifts," said Farebrother.

Even if a student already has a job the Career Fair still offers a unique opportunity to begin making contacts. "This is a place to network and that networking opportunity is invaluable. About 80 percent of getting into a job is who you know," said Farebrother.

Farebrother commented that no matter what your motivation is the bottom line is, "If you are looking for money there are a lot of employers looking right now; it's an opportunity to get some income right now."
