For students who want to learn self defense techniques but are unsure when or where to go, Kirkwood Student Media will be sponsoring a free self-defense seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Rec Center from 6-7:30 p.m.

Matt Rion of Cedar Valley Defense will help students, staff and faculty learn techniques to mentally and physically defend themselves from an attacker. Rion will demonstrate and then provide time for people to practice the techniques.

"We will also talk about things other than physical self defense," Rion said.

Although the seminar will be one hour and 30 minutes long, Rion added that no one will be fully able to defend him or herself by the time they leave.

"It takes 3,000 repetitions to have muscle memory," Rion said. "This [seminar] will give them options [if they are ever attacked]."

The type of self-defense Rion will be teaching is Hapkido, a Korean martial art that means "the way of coordinated power."

Rion explained that Hapkido is a "soft style" martial art that uses the opponent's energy against them.

Someone who weighs 100 lbs. and is well studied in the technique, should be able to defend themselves from someone who is twice their weight, or more, he explained.

The Hapkido curriculum involves approximately 200 techniques; each can be applied to real-world situations.

Rion has been practicing martial arts for 20 years. He is a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a Master Instructor. He is a third degree black belt in Combat Hapkido and traditional Hapkido. Rion is a Senior Instructor in both. Rion is also trained in Knife/Counter Knife combatitives and Pacific Archipelago combatitives.

Rion has been teaching since 1996 when he started out as an assistant instructor.
