Halloween is filled with many traditions. These traditions include costume parties and the ever popular trick or treating. However, in the Hollywood world one tradition has been going strong since 2004 and it does not look like it is going to stop.
The "SAW" movie franchise has become one of the most popular horror film franchises in recent history. Since 2004 one has been released each year continuing the story of the maniacal killer Jigsaw.
Jigsaw's victims are often ones that have not lived good lives. Instead of waiting for karmic retribution he takes matters in his own hands. By putting his victims in a trap where they can both cause great bodily harm to themselves and live or the body trap is sprung and they die. The choice often causes grimaces and shrieks from movie goers. Now is a special look at all four films.
"SAW" 2004 - The first film of the franchise begins with Cary Elwes and Danny Glover chained to pipes in a basement by their legs. There is a way out from there imprisonment, a hacksaw lies in the middle of the floor. This film's infamous trap is the reverse bear trap and starts the "Saw" trend of having a plot twist end the film.
"SAW II" 2005 - This film stars Donnie Wallberg as a down and out detective that has a family falling apart. Jigsaw's victims in this film are trapped in a house after being poisoned with a virus that will only allow them to live for a certain amount of time. The cure is in the house but to get it the victims have to subject themselves to self-torment that is not for the squeamish.
"SAW III" 2006 - In the opening we learn that Jigsaw is dying and he wants to play one more final game. This time his subjects are a couple who lost there son. The wife is a nurse that must keep Jigsaw alive and the husband goes through many of Jigsaw's traps will meet the person who killed his son and will be able to extract revenge if he chooses, too.
"SAW IV" 2007 - A cop who has lost two detectives due to Jigsaw's "game" is looking to save a friend; however, in order to do so he must go through Jigsaw's game with tests throughout the way. This film tells the back story of Jigsaw and how he became the man he was in the films. Also ties up plots from the other two film's in a fashion that has to be seen to be believed.
So many times movie fans talk about the next great horror film or the next great horror film franchise. The fact is it is here and it is "SAW." So, like the movie trailer says "It is Halloween so it must be SAW."
