On any given night in Linn County, men, women and children sleep in emergency shelters, transitional housing facilities, in vehicles or outdoors. National Homeless Awareness Week is Nov. 11 - 17 and there are several ways to help locally.
Four student organizations at Kirkwood Community College are collecting nonperishable food items to donate to local programs. Boxes have been placed in nearly every building on the main campus to make it convenient for those who wish to donate.
Another way to help out is through participating in the second annual Sleep Out for Homelessness Awareness on Nov. 17 at the Coe College campus. The event is a fund-raiser for homeless shelters in Linn County and is sponsored by Linn County Veterans Affairs and Community Circle of Care, Inc. One hundred percent of the money raised will be donated to Linn County emergency shelters and programs.
Those interested can drop by or stay all night at Coe College located at 1220 First Ave. NE. The event begins at 5 p.m. There will be educational activities from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. and the kickoff for Community Circle of Care's annual blanket drive for the homeless will also take place that evening.
Those who plan to sleep out need to request pledge sheets to solicit donations from family, friends and co-workers. For more information contact the Linn County Veterans Affairs Office at (319) 892-5160 or at veteran@linncounty.org or Community Circle of Care, Inc. at (319) 573-3673 or at www.circleofcare.net.
