On Oct. 30, Kirkwood Student Media sponsored a free self-defense seminar at the Rec Center from 6-7:30 p.m. Approximately 30 students and staff were in attendance to learn how to protect themselves using techniques from Hapkido, a form of martial arts. With help from Matt Rion of Cedar Valley Defense, attendees learned how to avoid getting attacked and what to do if you find yourself in a harmful situation.
"It was cool, I loved it," Emily Gaeta, culinary arts, said. "I will definitely be able to know what to do to hurt an attacker and get away from them."
Rion explained that even though he taught the students many techniques, they would be lucky to remember one in the event of being attacked.
"It may or may not help us, but it's good to know," Charlotte Uteg, Liberal Arts, said.
Rion brought some of his martial arts students along with him so attendees could do the moves at full speed and take them to the ground.
"I thought the seminar went really well," Rion said. "Students were receptive to the techniques."
