Drug companies have to take more responsibility for their actions.

I believe that drug companies need to take more responsibility for their actions and for the products that they distribute. The drugs Zoloft and Prozac are both antidepressant medications that are used to treat depression and other mood disorders. While these medications are supposed to help improve mental stability studies have shown that a small number of people may experience worsening depression or suicidal thoughts.

Why market these drugs when they will consistently create negative side effects for the user? The drugs Zoloft and Prozac are not safe for everyone who uses them and the companies realize this. But the profit they make outweighs the risk that goes with it.

The most recent instance in which we heard of these drugs being used was in the case of Kyle Marin. At the time of the Molly Edmondson and Katrina Hill murders, Marin was taking Zoloft, one of the leading antidepressants on the market today.

Most recently a testimony given by Marin's mother, Carrie Marin, revealed that he had been suffering from depression and had attempted suicide in April of 2006. Marin was admitted and later released from St. Luke's Hospital and went home with three prescriptions, one of which is Zoloft.

In no way am I defending the actions of Marin but I do believe the drugs that he was taking had harmful effects on his psychological state. And he is not alone. In numerous cases frequent users have stepped forward and admitted to using these prescriptions and then committing heinous acts such as in the Marin case. While some may say that Marin chose to take the drug, I would have to disagree because these drugs are prescribed to patients and patients are being encouraged to take them. If drug companies don't start taking more responsibility for their actions, more people will be negatively affected and more crimes like this will continue to happen.

Your opinion is baseless. Kyle Marin had a history of violence long before anti-depressants came into his life. You can't say that the drugs made him violent when he was prone to violence all along. (Continued…)
