It began in Iowa City- females can request a free and safe ride home on Friday and Saturday nights.

The NITE RIDE program picks up students at a certain point or by request in Iowa City and brings them back to their apartments and dorms. The service has been devised due to the growing number of assaults within Iowa City over the past year.

I believe Kirkwood Community College should offer a similar service in the Cedar Rapids area. With similar situations that have been in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids individuals could be at the same risk.

I believe that if the service is offered, the number of assaults that occur will possibly decrease.

In Iowa City the service is offered every Friday, Saturday and Sunday; however, it will not be offered during school breaks, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

With the available times that students have the opportunity to get a free and safe ride back to their apartment, it should be used all the time.

Since August of 2006, there have been over 35 assaults and most of them have been on women. The NITE RIDE founders hope that with a program in Iowa City and one proposed in Cedar Rapids, the number of women being assaulted will go down.

Without a similar service such as NITE RIDE in Cedar Rapids, the number of assaults will be less likely to decrease. I think that if a trial run was to be given through the service, it would work in Cedar Rapids. Most females would take advantage of getting a safe and free ride back to their dorms. Kirkwood should provide an opportunity for this type of service to be tested.

The NITE RIDE service would increase safety and I believe that Kirkwood should have a similar service for female students. This would help so that more attacks on women do not continue to occur.
