Carpooling makes scheduling more difficult and complex

When I pull into Nielson Hall on Thursday mornings and step out of my car I notice the inordinate amount of students who are getting out of their vehicles alone.

As I walk from the parking lot, sometimes it can send my brain reeling with questions about gas shortages, gas prices, global warming, and the typical green stuff.

The question that almost always tends to arise is, "would I really trade an extra hour of sleep and a few bucks for feeling environmentally friendly?" The answer tends to be no.

I know it sounds horrible and I really have tried to go green but let's face it:I, like many others, enjoy heading into classes late and leaving early and when I looked at carpooling with my sister and one of my best friends it came down to having to come in early and staying late.

There are a variety of reasons students may choose to avoid carpooling. First of all, many students work around classes and need to be able to come and go as they please.

This is important because college is expensive and so are apartments, cars and leisure activities.

For example, I am taking photography courses and I need to be able to get out and take my photos. Without a car I might not be able to get out during my breaks between classes.

Is it unfortunate that the only time I really carpool is when I go to movies or when my friends need a designated driver.

I like the freedom and I like being able to sleep in on Mondays when my first class isn't until 1 p.m.

Even though gas prices are rising and we have a global warming problem, I don't know if these issues will be enough to get me into my sister's SUV in the morning instead of my Chevy at noon.
