Christmas, Hannakah, Kwanzaa, and Eid are tricky holidays when it comes to staying focused on the reason for celebration. With all of the sales at the large department stores sometimes it feels like the whole point of the season is to buy things.
However, this time of year is really about sharing and giving to others and enjoying the warm feeling afterwards, as well as being with your family.
Becoming more generous is something that everyone should work on and Kirkwood offers an impressive variety of projects to help those in need.
A food drive is a great way to donate items needed by others, and Kirkwood Community College ran several food drives last month. Boxes for the food were set up at several locations around the campus.
Linn Hall, Student Life, the Bookstore, Library and the Computer Lab were just a few of the many places that had donation boxes set up.
Currently, the Unity Club is managing a Waypoint Holiday Drive that will end on Saturday, Dec 7. Donations of any items listed on the drop boxes in Linn, Benton, Cedar and Washington halls will go to the Waypoint Domestic Violence Shelter and Madge Phillips Center for the homeless.
Student Life took donations to a personal level by hosting Angel Trees in Iowa, Linn and Nielson halls.
Students and faculty can take a card off the tree and then buy a gift for a child involved with the Tanager Place, a private non-profit organization that provides services to children and families with needs.
The gift can then be dropped off at Student Life or the information booth at Linn Hall with the card.
These are just a few of the many examples of generosity around the Kirkwood campus. It's impressive to see that college students, with busy schedules, can take the time and effort to participate in helping others this holiday season.
