Basketball teams battling season

The Kirkwood men's basketball team squared off against Illinois Central Nov. 16 in the first of the two Kirkwood games in the Kirkwood Classic. Despite strong efforts, the Eagles fell to Cougars 79 - 74.

The first half of the game did not go well for the Eagles. Sophomore forward DaRell Crittendon scored their first point from a free throw after Illinois Central scored an impressive 17 points. After getting their first score of the game the Eagles began to slowly close the point differential. By the end of the first half the Eagles trailed by only 10 points.

In the second half of the game Kirkwood continued to close in on the Cougars with a few offensive rallies but throughout the entire game Kirkwood failed to communicate on defense. Jermain Davis, No. 23, scored several points for the team throughout the game and strong second half scorers were Corey Viet, No. 42, and Joel Barkers, No. 33.

Even with strong scoring in the second half of the game the Eagles were not able to come back from the imposing lead that Illinois Central took early on. The second game of the classic, Kirkwood was able to pull off an impressive 79-67 win against Southeastern Community College.

The men's basketball team is currently 9-1 for the season. The teams averages 78 PPG and are holding the opponents to only 59 PPG. The leading scorers of the team are Ali Farokhmanensh averaging 12.9 PPG and Jermain Davis, who recently signed with the Iowa Hawkeyes, with 11.8 PPG. The Eagles next home game is Jan 9. against Clinton Community College.

The Eagles women's basketball has currently been on the road the most of the semester due to having only one home game this fall. The women are 3-3 overall and 2-0 in their conference. The teams averages 74 PPG and are holding the opponents to only 56 PPG. The leading scorers of the team are sophomore Allie Lindemann with 13.6 PPG and sophomore Breann Hill with 11.3 PPG. Sophomore Lauren Thomas-Johnson and Sophomore Breann Hill have recently signed with Marquette University of Milwaukee. Breann and Lauren were apart of the 2006 national championship team and will continue to be teammates at Marquette.

The Women's next game will be against Illinois Central in Peoria, IL Dec. 8. Their next home game is Jan.5 against Iowa Western, which is also Alumni Day.
