Mount Mercy, Cornell, Coe and Kirkwood take turns hosting one of the biggest arts shows in Iowa for college art students. The show includes 40 feet of linear wall or "scrimmage" displaying the top chosen pieces from each of the four colleges.
There is more preparation than just simply handing in projects. Most of the time instructors are looking for "excellent craftsmanship," explained Helen Grunewald, photography instructor.
"We are looking for a piece that is very strong and challenging. Not only that they can make it well but something that sets it apart, to stand along side small four year colleges," Grunewald said.Justin Orlowski is one of Grunewald's photography students who is entering in the upcoming art show for the first time."Helen helped me put together my concept. She helped me put pieces together that would go in the show," Orlowski said.
Arbe Bareis, fine arts and performing arts specialist, said, "If you're going to participate in the art shows you must work really hard and don't miss class." Bareis is at the top of the list when it comes to choosing the selected pieces for the shows.
"I look for not only good composition but if all the formal elements are good," he said. Doug Hall, art professor, also helps students for the art show. Hall teaches many different forms of printmaking. Ballentine is a student of Hall's who volunteers his time to help other students in the classroom.
"There are print exhibition's all over the country but only two in Iowa. So art shows held for Kirkwood give printmaking students an extra chance for them to show their work as well as other art students," said Ballentine. The current art show is being held at Coe through March 23. The opening reception is Friday, Feb. 29 from 5-7 p.m.
