Students who enjoyed the Kirkwood Community College sponsored movie nights will no longer have this free entertainment option. Now Kirkwood does not allow for any movie nights, largely due to copyright infringement.
"We wanted to show Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" with discussion and handouts. Also a movie on gay issues with discussion," said KCC Democrat adviser Nancy Sauerman.
"Student Life has determined it is against the law to show movies, even in a educational setting with discussion. Even if one of us owns the movie," said Sauerman.
In the past, KAPS has shown the movie "Mr. Woodcock" and the KCC Democrats/UNITY were scheduled to show the controversial global warming video "An Inconvenient Truth" last Wednesday. However, the movie was cancelled at the last minute due to copyright violation.
"Turns out we can't show movies on campus for educational purposes without paying about $500 each for copyright search and compensation unless they are shown in class by a faculty member and they relate specifically to the course topic," said Sauerman.
