DEKALB, Ill.-Thursday, shortly before 3 p.m., Steven Kazmierczak walked into a geology lecture on the Northern Illinois University campus and started shooting. By the time it was all over Kazmierczak had shot 21 students before committing suicide. The current death toll is six in addition to Kazmierczak.

Students at Kirkwood reacted to the news. "It's something that shouldn't happen. It's something you shouldn't get used to," said Brandon Stone, criminal justice major.

However, students don't appear to be too worried about security on campus at Kirkwood. "I'm not really worried about the safety of students here. I do think though that we need to monitor suspicious behavior more closely; people with homicidal thoughts and hostility," said Toni Neuzil, history major.

"We should have officers walk around more on campus," said Robert Jansen, GIS program major.

Students who were injured in the attack were taken to area community hospitals. Since the shooting eight have been released and seven students are still in critical condition. Other victims include: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchestar; Catalina Garcia, 20 of Cicero; Ryanne Mace, 19 of Carpentersville; and Julianna Gehant, 32 of Meriden; Gayle Dubowski, 20 of Carol Stream. One of the victims has not been identified.
