Students interested in owning their own business have the opportunity to learn what it takes. Kirkwood Community College students are now able to earn their Accelerated Entrepreneurial Certificate during fall and spring semesters. The courses are offered in an accelerated format or a traditional 16-week face-to-face course in the fall.

The Accelerated Entrepreneurial Certificate consists of four blended-learning courses designed to teach students how to research, develop and write detailed start-up business plans, which can be used to create successful businesses. The blended learning environment provides a dynamic, interactive experience that combines the flexibility of Internet-based learning with the benefit of having face-to-face contact with the instructor during the course.

"You learn a lot about what to do and what not to do when opening a business," said Kirby Patten, marketing major. Patten said he plans to use the knowledge he gains from the classes to open a tanning salon once he finishes school.

Other students such as Daniel Westcott, restaurant management major, simply want to see what it would take to start a business in case he decides to look into entrepreneurial ventures after he finishes Kirkwood.

The four basic classes students must complete in order to receive the certificate are Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Advertising for Entrepreneurs, Accounting for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Planning.

These courses are based on testing feasibility, the marketing plan, financial management, skills, concepts and strategies relevant for early stage entrepreneurs.

Small Business Planning will only be offered in the accelerated format and the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course will be offered in the 16-week face-to-face class. The Introduction to Entrepreneurship will also be available as an online format.

Students will experience all aspects of planning a new venture from determining their personal vision, to conducting marketing analysis, to testing financial feasibility.

The end goal for the class is to have a workable business plan so that students are ready to go if they wish to pursue their own business ventures. The certificate demonstrates why good planning leads to successful business performance.

Students will gain insight in how the various parts of a business fit together and why they need to be managed carefully to operate a business successfully.

Anyone who is interested must register for all four classes during the same semester. Each class is three credit hours and meets Tuesday from 5:30-9:30 p.m. in the Kirkwood Resource Center.
