These athletes may not be seen in action on the Johnson Hall court but they shine in their own respect.
Many students who come to Kirkwood Community College participate in working out at the Rec Center and then become involved in one of the many intramural sports hosted at the college.
There are nearly 2,000 students who participate in intramural sports each year. Currently, there are approximately 150 students on 16 teams competing in intramural basketball at the Rec Center.
There are no organized practices or formal coaches for any of the intramural sports.
"It is like pick-up games, except we keep score and schedule games," said Recreation and Housing Services Director Josh Troutman.
Games are usually held from 7 -10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Intramural sports have been around longer than NCAA sports and have also been a long tradition at Kirkwood. They are designed to emphasize participation, physical activity and fun.
In review of past years, Troutman said flag football has been the most popular event, followed by basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, soccer and softball. In general, team activities have been more popular with students than individual activities.
For spring intramural sports, individuals can fill out the registration forms for both individual and team sports at the Rec Center.
The next activities hosted this year will be a pool league and outdoor soccer league.
"We are always looking for new ideas," stated Troutman. He added that anyone who has ideas and suggestions for events or activities should contact him at the Rec Center.
"Everyone is encouraged to participate in a sport over the course of the year," said Troutman.
