The question arose when Kirkwood Community College's Marketing Department was working on brochures-what is the new part of campus located off of Kirkwood Blvd. going to be called?
The new area currently includes phase one of a two part project. The first phase was the Center for Continuing Education and phase two will include the hotel and culinary arts area.
Meetings started on Jan. 22 to decide a name for the area. Eight people attend each meeting, the latest being Feb. 14.
Each session lasts approximately one hour. Representatives from the parts of campus that will be affected are on hand at the meetings.
"This is the first time we've done something like this," Kathy Kaiser, director of Marketing Services, said.
When the group meets they and brainstorm a list of possible names for the new part of campus.
"We have some recommendations that we've sent to the president's cabinet for review," Kaiser said. "It's an extensive list."
After the group has made all of their proposals, the final decision lies in the hands of the president's cabinet, which will then make the final decision.
"We're trying to make decisions that give us flexibility," Kaiser said, noting that the new area must accommodate plans Kirkwood has for the future.
"A lot of care and passion has been put into the project," Kirkwood's Public Information Services Director Steve Carpenter said. He added that the college has to think about where it will be in the next 20-30 years.
There has been no time frame established for when the new part of campus will be named.
