The Kirkwood Community College baseball team will attempt to add to their history of success with the signing of six players for the 2008-09 season.
The six new players include Pat Lala, middle infielder, and Ryan Clark, right handed pitcher, both from Marion; Seth Cox, first baseman, and Cal Faul, outfielder, both from Cedar Rapids; Brennan Melloy, middle infielder, Cascade; and Troy Jorgensen, right handed pitcher, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.
Head baseball coach John Lewis said he expects that this crop of freshman players will have an impact on the team. "It just depends on their attitudes and work habits," said Lewis. "If they want to come in and they want a job and they beat a sophomore out, so be it."
Lewis noted that Jorgensen "…had a lot of promise" and is expected to be "one of our key guys, I think next year." He went on to say that Faul, a J-Hawk letter winner, is a "strong kid and likes the game."
His comments on the rest of the signees included, "I think those guys will step up right away."
Returning to the Kirkwood squad this season will be First Team All-American Travis Bennett who hit .412 as a freshman. The Eagles were 38-19 in '07 and hit .353 as a team.
The Eagles begin their season on March 2 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
