Issue date: 3/13/08 Section: A&E
When it comes to art galleries around Cedar Rapids, the city of five seasons has a lot to offer for the art connoisseur.
"I'd say the variety of art places around Cedar Rapids is pretty good. I know some places to go but I just have no time," said Connie Nickel, business major.
Famous artists such as Grant Wood and Marvin Cone spent a lot of time in Cedar Rapids and their works can be found not only in private collections but also on display at the Cedar Rapids Art Museum.
The museum also hosts several traveling art displays. As a bonus, Kirkwood students can get in for free with their EagleCard.
One local spot for upcoming artists is The Art Vault. The company's goal is to give local artists a place to work and sell their art at a reasonable price. The Art Vault provides people with a unique artistic experience. For example, the public is given the opportunity to watch potters, sculptures, glass blowers and painters create their art. For more information about The Art Vault, visit their Web site at www.theartvault.org.
Cedar Rapids will also be hosting one of the largest outside art exhibits displayed downtown. This event, which is hosted by the Downtown District, will be held at the end of March. The exhibit will showcase a variety of artists from throughout the nation. There will be 38 sculptures on display and the event is open to the community.
