Sorting through the receiving end

Five thousand letters, 10,000 pieces of bulk mail and few hands to sort it all. This is a predicament that the Kirkwood Community Colleges receiving department goes through on a daily basis.
Chris Hartman, central receiving supervisor, said he manages a timely schedule not only on the main campus but to the Iowa City campus as well. Hartman has 12 employees delivering to 46 stops and that's just on the main campus. Four of the employees are full-time and the others work part time. Most of the part time employees are work study students.
Matt Stanford, Liberal Arts and business major, is one student who is employed through the work study program. "The hardest part I'd say is moving furniture and moving offices. We have our easy days and our hard days it just depends," he said.
"Kirkwood and Linn Hall generate the most mail. And because they generate the most mail we have to delivery and pick up times scheduled for those buildings three times a day. The scheduled times are at 8 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.," said Hartman.
"We also deliver to four other locations in the metro area including the KTOS Center, Marion Center, Lincoln Center and the Resource Center," he added.
In the past few months Cedar Rapids has been hit hard with continuous snowstorms and Hartman said the storms have affected them as well.
"The weather put a few bumps in the road. It caused our courier service to be a little delayed but has not stopped us," said Hartman.
He continued that it was more of a safety concern for his employees than anything else. Hartman has called a carrier on route to stop the delivery when the weather caused the streets to become too dangerous.
Hartman also explained that the Grant Wood AEA provides service for them twice a week for the heavier loads such as custodial supplies and moving furniture.
Hartman and his team recently created something called the "supplement delivery" to help them when Grant Wood AEA isn't able to supply their services due to weather or other circumstances.
In addition to sorting through mail and making sure everything is being processed correctly Hartman is involved in other projects on and off campus. Those projects include the new construction Kirkwood is undergoing as well as managing employees, dealing with income and delivering furniture.
