Majestic and surreal is the only way to describe the small art show currently located on the second floor of Nielson Hall.
The work on display is by students in upper level photo classes, taught by Helen Grunwald, as well as independent study students. The show features 12 individual photos that are all black and white silver gelatin prints. All the prints are matted and framed on the walls. The photos are the beginning of a semester's work of printing by Grunewald's current photo students and the prowess that some of these students have is easily seen.
April Keller, art major, is one of the students featured in the show. Her print was made from two different negatives, which involved combining two different photos into one image. The effect is breathtaking. Keller has a portrait blending into the trees of a somber photo of a cemetery, which will force students walking by to take a second glance and maybe even a third.
"I like how its life and death," stated Keller. She titled her photo 'Chaos.'
Justin Orlowski, Liberal Arts major, is another student featured in the show. Orlowski has four photos on the wall and he titled the series "Winter Series." Each photo is shot in a different place but Orlowski seems to focus strongly on repetition in his series, whether is be a stack of plates or a line of trees in the dead of night.
"My goal with doing shows like this is to force myself to produce work," stated Orlowski. "I want to improve by getting other students' input so I can produce a strong portfolio and transfer to a four-year program."
The other students' photos all showcase unique styles and strong technical ability which makes the show a must see for any Kirkwood Community College student who enjoys photography or for anyone who is simply near Neilsen Hall and has a free moment.
