For jazz lovers, the next few weeks at Kirkwood Community College are set to be good ones, as KCC's finest vocal and instrumentalists are set to hit the stage for one last time. The college will host the Instrumental Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 19. The Cedar Rapids Big Band and Kirkwood Jazz Ensemble will also perform at the event.
"We've worked with the Cedar Rapids Big Band before, last fall but not prior to this year," said Dan Conner, land management major and trombone player.
Guest artist Carl Saunders will also be performing. Throughout his career Saunders had been involved in composing and educating. In the past he has worked with Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Bill Holman and Clare Fischer.
"Carl Saunders is a great trumpet player. I knew about him before this," said Conner.
In addition to Saunders performance, Kirkwood musicians plan to perform new pieces for the audience. "Some of the songs we're playing for this concert we played in Chicago; some are new ones that have never been performed yet and none for them have been performed here at Kirkwood," said Amanda Eldred, music major.
Conner added, "We'll be playing "Broadbottom," "Thou Swell," "Beautiful Love and Blue," "New Rochelle" and "Late Shift Blues."
The KCC Jazz Ensemble has been practicing four hours a week.
"We've all worked really hard and we'll all be happy when we get to perform these songs here at Kirkwood with Carl Saunders. I'm sure this concert will definitely be a good way for our band to end a great year together," said Eldred.
The final performance will be this Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Ballantyne Auditorium. The vocal jazz concert will be Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 in Ballantyne Auditorium.
