Culinary Arts students at Kirkwood Community College traveled to O Saka Kyoto and Kobe, Japan March 14-22.
While on the trip students were offered the opportunity to take cooking classes, travel to produce markets and see many different cultural sights.
The trip was offered to second, third and fourth semester students. Students typically pay for the trip themselves but are offered a $500 scholarship.
"Students are given appreciation for the culture which also gives them appreciation for the food," said David Horsfield, culinary arts instructor. He added that students were given the experience of traveling to Japan's culinary schools and learning a new language.
The trip was hosted by the Japanese college group JIKEI, which is responsible for culinary schools, architecture and medicine. They also provided a translator who was with the Culinary Arts group at all times so they could have a better understanding of their daily proceedings.
Japan is just one trip offered to students in the Culinary Arts Program. Students are also able to travel to France and Italy. The trip to Italy will take place this May.
