May 6-17 the Department of Humanities and Health Science will embark on a journey to London, England. The London Study Abroad program will send 12 students and faculty to study the history and current practices of England's health care system.

"As everyone knows, we have heard heated debates on government-supported health care in America for decades," said Connie Lee McCall of the Health Science Department at Kirkwood. "We think this is a great chance to see first-hand the pros and cons of this long standing system in a nation that continues to have strong ties to the U.S."

The group will depart on May 6 from the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids and upon arriving in London they will participate in a Study Abroad orientation.

The itinerary includes visits to the British Science Museum and its Welcome Wing and History of Medicine, a tour of St. Bart's Hospital and adjoining medical museum, a guided tour of the Pharmaceutical Garden and Garden of World Medicine at the Chelsea Physic Garden. The group will also visit the London Healthcare Programme at City University of London.

The trip, however, will not be all study and no leisure. Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Florence Nightingale Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum are among some of the sights that the study group will see.

They will also take a day trip to visit the White Cliffs of Dover, the English Channel and Dover Castle with its secret tunnels and underground World War II hospital.

The students will be expected to keep a daily journal and choose a topic on health care or humanities studies to present as a class project after their return to Cedar Rapids on May 17.
