IOWA CITY -Students who attempt to balance college classes, tests, homework, a job and time with friends and family may find it difficult and stressful.
"Students are in a high stress position," said Biology instructor Jeanelle Boyer during a Success Seminar on stress management at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa City.
Boyer explained that excess stress can lead to many physiological problems such as headaches, anxiety, a loss of energy, insomnia and depression.
Boyer also explained during the seminar there are many ways to combat and reduce stress. One suggestion is exercise.
"Some studies show that exercise works faster and might even be more effective than anti depressants," said Boyer, adding that 30 minutes a day is enough to see positive effects.
Another suggestion by Boyer was to take time to be alone. This time could include reading, listening to music, watching television or taking a nap.
On the flipside, being social can help reduce stress so it is important for people to spend time with their friends and families as well.
Lastly Boyer stressed the advantages of practicing yoga or meditation as a means of keeping the body stable. "Yoga originally meant to unite," said Boyer. "Yoga is a way to deliberately quiet the chattering mind."
Students interested in learning more about yoga can join the yoga class at the Kirkwood Iowa City campus each Friday at 3:15 p.m. in room 353.
Boyer said she also teaches two yoga classes at The Studio on Dubuque Street, south of the Sheraton by the railroad tracks. There is a beginner class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:45 p.m. and a more advanced class on Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m.
