After reading the March 13, 2008, article published in our very own Communiqué entitled "ASAC Committee Combats Drinking" I had a few things to say on the topic.

I think that underage drinking is a huge problem that typically starts in high school. Young teens bored of the same old weekend routine start experimenting with new things. Popularity comes into play and people begin drinking to fit in with the rest of their peers. Weekend binge drinking becomes a reoccurring activity that teens see as rebellious and fun.

I hear of Iowa City's 19 and older rule at the bar and it doesn't surprise me that it is this way. Changing the bar age to 21 would do nothing but encourage kids to just go pick up a case and drink it at their own place.

Let's not forget we are in college. These are the wild and crazy years of our lives. If the kids are already going out to the bars then they must be interested in alcohol in the first place. If the zero tolerance law of underage drinking didn't stop such individuals then what is some bar restriction going to do?

This problem of underage binge drinking is already an unsolvable problem by the time teens go to college. The article discussed how easy it is to obtain alcohol in Cedar Rapids and this is true. But maybe underage drinking isn't 100 percent destructive. Many people say they have learned how to drink responsibly from college.

If society wants to stop underage drinking, they should go to the root of the problem: High school students and young teens.
