Feeling like you are being followed home from a late night class should not be a scenario for students to worry about at Kirkwood Community College.

Security measures at Kirkwood have been increased over the past years with security taking another step at Kirkwood. Tom Kaldenberg, executive director of facilities, stated, "We want to keep the students safe while attending Kirkwood. There is always a security guard to help you if needed."

Having students take precautions is the first key to ensure safety whether on or off campus. Tips include locking windows and doors and checking to see who is knocking at the door before opening it.

There is always a security guard on campus, 24 hours a day, in case students would like to be walked to their car or even need assistance charging a vehicle battery. To reach the security guard on campus students can call 389-1774. The security guard can help students by unlocking or escorting them to their car.

Kirkwood security does not patrol the housing areas around the campus, so students need to be aware of the appropriate numbers to call for their building. "We want the students to be safe and call for help if they need it," said Kaldenberg.

Some tips to keep safe whether on or off campus are to walk home with a friend at night, keep in a well - lighted area and have keys in hand before approaching a door.
