Kirkwood houses local businesses, helps employees after flood

When Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities were ravaged by floodwaters in June, Kirkwood Community College was there to help in any way it could. "We really are the community's college," Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich said. "It has become our mission to help the community.

New housing director helps students adjust to campus life

As first year students pack up and get ready to move into their new apartments, they are preparing for a "world of new" - new roommates, new landlords and new faces. One of those new faces is Sharon Fara, Kirkwood Community College's new housing director. The role of housing director involves dealing with 4,000 students who call the apartments surrounding Kirkwood their home.

New EagleCard lands on campus

With a new look and many added options, the new EagleCard is ready to dive into students' pockets while the EagleCard of past years has flown the coop. The EagleCard is the student ID at Kirkwood Community College that not only provides access to the Rec Center but also allows students to check books out at the library and make purchases at Sammy's Kafé and the C-Store for a 5 percent discount.

Clearing the air on Iowa's new nonsmoking act

The Smoke Free Air Act went into effect on July 1 and many smokers had to decide whether they wanted to deal with the inconvenience of taking their smoking habit to an isolated area, or just quit to avoid the hassle. The new law prohibits smoking in most public and outdoor areas in Iowa.

Super Size 7 will be performing a concert Thursday, Aug. 21 outside Benton Hall at 8:30 p.m. This is only one of the many free events that Kirkwood Community College will be offering to start the school year. Seth Vander Tuig, student life coordinator, said, "I am hoping for nice weather and a lot of people to attend.

Academic building is sign of campus growth

Construction is nearing completion at the site of Kirkwood Community College's newest building. The new academic building will hold more classrooms where future Kirkwood Eagles will study and learn. According to Executive Director of Facilities, Tom Kaldenberg, the 90,000 square foot building has cost the school $14 million, all of which was paid for with a bond issue.
