With a new look and many added options, the new EagleCard is ready to dive into students' pockets while the EagleCard of past years has flown the coop.

The EagleCard is the student ID at Kirkwood Community College that not only provides access to the Rec Center but also allows students to check books out at the library and make purchases at Sammy's Kafé and the C-Store for a 5 percent discount. As an added convenience, there are certain vending machines around campus that take EagleCards.

For new students who may not be familiar with the Buy on the Fly option, the EagleCard can be used at some local businesses around Kirkwood, including Blimpie, Dairy Queen, Hy-Vee and Paul Revere's Pizza.

One of the new EagleCard features this year is that it can double as a debit card for individuals who bank at U.S. Bank.

"U.S. Bank is the largest campus card partner in the country and we wanted to give students more opportunities," said Rick Anderson, executive director of Business Services.

Anderson recommended going to the U.S. Bank and EagleCard FAQ page on Kirkwood's Web site for additional answers. Also, U.S. Bank representatives will be on campus for a limited time to provide assistance.

Along with the new perks the EagleCard offers, the card also sports a new look. Gone is the day of the old layout and darkened pictures. The redesigned EagleCard has a more prominent eagle on it.

"I like that there's more blue on it and that the picture is smaller. It just overall looks better," said Char Uteg, Liberal Arts major.

Server problems and other technical difficulties have disrupted the EagleCard office.

"As with any technology, we had a few bumps. We had a few card issues last week and found out that we had some magstripe issues. But as of today, everything is now operational. The Information Technology Department and the company, Blackboard, have been working on it to get everything fixed," Anderson replied..

"We're really going to push it as an ID for staff and students and I think our association with U.S. Bank will help," Anderson said.
