Kirkwood to hold graduation ceremonies

Kirkwood Community College will hold commencement  for its college credit and GED/adult high school programs this weekend.

Both ceremonies will be held at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids.

Kirkwood will confer 2,290 college credit degrees, diplomas and certificates for study in the past academic year. The college also has awarded more than 465 GED and adult high school diplomas in 2011-12.

Adult High School Commencement

The Kirkwood Adult High School Commencement is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11.

Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich will address the students, with Dean of Secondary Programs and Distance Learning Todd Prusha and Director of High School Completion Programs Marcel Kielkucki also officiating.

The ceremonies will feature two student graduates, Corina Garcia and Joe Hauskins.

The college commencement will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12.

Kirkwood Board of Trustees Chairman Lois Bartelme will greet the audience on behalf of the college, with Jean McMenimen, president of the Kirkwood Faculty Association sharing the instructor’s perspective on the students’ accomplishments.

Britney Opheim of Iowa City will add comments on her student experiences. Opheim is on the Student Leadership Council. She will receive her Associate of Arts degree at the May 12 ceremonies.

President Mick Starcevich will complete the speaker’s schedule with his remarks to the graduates.

Who may attend

Both ceremonies are free and open to the public.

Guests with a ticket for the college commencement can watch the ceremony in the gymnasium. Those without tickets can watch in an overflow room.
