IC Regional Center ribbon cutting

Kirkwood Community College will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for its newest regional center at the University of Iowa in Iowa City on Oct. 8.

Bill Lamb, vice president of Academic Affairs at Kirkwood, said that in addition to bringing new programs of study to the college, the regional centers also collaborate with local school districts to provide educational opportunities to high school students.

For students who seek connections to the University of Iowa, Lamb said the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa offers a unique partnership between the U of I, Grant Wood AEA and Kirkwood.

Although Kirkwood already has a campus in Iowa City, the new center offers some courses the campus cannot. According to Lamb, the Iowa City campus primarily serves transfer students and those jointly enrolled at the U of I. The new regional center will offer technical programs that include automotive, advanced manufacturing, carpentry, welding and more. Currently, the center serves primarily high school students who are enrolled in college courses.

Kelli Murray, nursing, stated that “it’s a really nice school and I think it’s cool that high school students have this oppurtunity.”

Lamb added that Kirkwood plans to offer both credit and non-credit courses at the regional center that will focus on workforce training.

The Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa is located at 2301 Oakdale Blvd., Coralville. Other Kirkwood regional centers include Jones County, Linn County and Washington County.
