Seventeen-year-old nursing student Abby Costache is attending her first year at Kirkwood Community College after having traveled to Romania, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Costache was born in Windsor, Canada, and has three younger siblings. She said she is thankful for her father’s job as an automotive engineer, giving her family the experience of moving and discovering the cultures in other countries. Costache said she moved to Japan at age nine and learned to speak the language, involving three different alphabets. She added that this experience also helped her acquire a taste for Japanese food. After living in Japan for five years, Costache said her family moved to Italy for a year before settling in the United States, where they have lived for the past two years.

Costache attended Linn Mar High School when she first moved to the United States, and is now studying to become a nurse because she said she enjoys helping others. She added her goal is to continue traveling and helping others on mission trips. Right now she said she is currently pursuing her goal by taking Conversational Spanish for Nurses, a course offered at Kirkwood. Abby expressed that she has loved the start of her first year at Kirkwood, though it is different from schools in Italy and Japan.

Abby said she and her family love to travel, and they make time in their lives to do so. “It is important and also an amazing experience to see the beauty in other cultures,” said Costache. Costache added that she would encourage other students to travel if given the opportunity because it can bring someone out of their comfort zone and change their perspective of the world. She advised all students to keep an open mind while traveling  in order to “completely immerse yourself in a foreign culture.”
