Although enrollment at Kirkwood Community College has steadily declined for several years, the numbers for Fall 2015 show a slight increase from last year.

According to a recent Kirkwood press release, total enrollment for the college increased from 14,708 students in the 2014 fall semester to 14,727 students in the fall of 2015.

“This year we awarded more than $3 million in scholarships,” said Jon Buse, vice president of Student Services. “The bottom line is that Kirkwood is affordable, accessible and has outstanding academic programs that prepare students to transfer or enter the workforce.”

According to Buse, the number of students attending Kirkwood straight from high school has increased 13 percent from last year.

Former Prairie High School student Jacob Sherman, Liberal Arts, said he was persuaded to attend Kirkwood by the combination of affordable classes and a healthy, strongly connected network of counselors and administrators who help point many students in Kirkwood’s direction.

Buse said, as a whole, Iowa community colleges continue to bring in larger numbers of new students than any of the three state universities.

Buse said he believes this is a good sign that students are becoming savvy enough to know that they can get a great collegiate education at an affordable cost.

“Recruiting students involves the work of a lot of great people in the Admissions Office but also goes well beyond to other areas of the college. Faculty and staff in the academic departments are actively engaged in the work of meeting with prospective students to explain the benefits of our academic programs and this high level of involvement across campus makes a big impact on students and their decision-making,” said Buse.
