Recently Kirkwood Community College exhibited the glassworks of artist and KCC graduate Anna Grabowski.

Her exhibit was a mix of glass and furniture and featured art works such as a glass shoe, glass hands and a vanity to apply makeup. Grabowski also used round hat boxes and tables to display solid glass hats.

Anna Tschudi, Liberal Arts, said she thinks the art exhibits at Kirkwood are important. “I feel art is a way for expression and creativity. And when they [students not involved in art] see that people can do it, it shows that everyone can be artistic. So yeah, art is important,” she said.

Doug Hartley, hotel management, agreed. He said, “I think [art] is the most important thing in the world. And, as for Kirkwood’s art program, I had a ceramics class and I think Kirkwood is really doing something out there.”

Although Grabowski’s exhibit has ended, a new art exhibit by Halle Siepman will be available in Iowa Hall Oct. 5 – 30.

According to her website,, Siepman graduated from Sonoma State University and most recently became a graduate of Iowa State University with a MFA in painting and printmaking. Siepman said she credits Athens, Crete, Delphi and her love of classical Greek architecture with inspiring her art works.

Siepman said she often uses vivid colors, simply black and white, or muted themes with slashes and dabs of color to bring her drawings and watercolor art to life, according to her website.

Siepman won the Iowa Arts Counsel Project Grant and she became one of two UNI students to receive the Prestigious Stanley Award, making her one out of 20 students in the world to be presented with the honor in 2014.

As discussed on her website, Siepman said she sticks with this kind of architectural style for some of her paintings but deviates from that in some of her other paint works.
