Tutoring available for academic aid

Kirkwood Community College established Learning Service programs as an aid for students over 40 years ago. In early 2000, Tutoring Services became a separate department that continues to offer free tutoring to students.

According to Tutoring Support Services Coordinator Mike Scallon, “Tutoring services are offered free to any Kirkwood student enrolled in credit classes. Students may receive tutoring for two different classes each semester, for up to two hours per week for each class.”

Scallon explained that Tutoring Services typically has 800 students a semester who are aided with peer-to-peer tutoring and 1,100 students utilize walk-in tutoring per semester.

Scallon added, “Students with an accommodational plan could get up to four hours of tutoring in each course. Disabled students get textbooks electronically and have a software that allows the text to be read to the student. You could be a student trying to shoot for the stars and get an ‘A’. We have one of the strongest Wi-Fi connections at Kirkwood too, so there’s no excuse.”

Tutoring Services offers walk-in tutoring at the physical location of the program, according to Scallon.

This includes Nursing, Prep for College Math and Human Anatomy and Physiology in Linn Hall, Industrial Technologies in Jones Hall and Farm Business Management in Washington Hall. Tutoring for other classes is offered in the Tutoring Service area in Cedar Hall.

“Whenever I’m struggling, someone in Tutoring Services knows how to answer my questions pretty well. I go there for help with some of my math and science classes and my grades have improved a lot,” said Latayshia Lacey, Associate of Science major.

Whitney Edaburn, Chemical Engineering, a math and science tutor, advised students to come in because it’s a great resource. “Tutors here are usually prepared for any question and they’re willing to help out everyone. Plus it really helps to talk to someone who has already been through a class you need help with,” she said.

The Tutoring Services program is accredited by both the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). Scallon said, “Our tutors target individual learning styles and strategies. This helps students further understand course content, prepare for exams, expand study skills, get help on difficult portions of a class and stay on the right track.”

Scallon said there are employment opportunities for students who would like to tutor other students. “The pay is $8 per hour for peer-to-peer tutoring and $11 per hour for walk-in tutoring. We have a Computer Application Skills Lab and six quiet rooms with personal computers and dry erase boards. We have a general study area and classroom for presentation. It also serves as an overflow area for tutors to meet learners,” he said.

Scallon added, “Students interested in being tutors can apply online or come in during our hours of operation. Tutors must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and must have earned a B+ or better in the courses they would like to tutor in.”
