Unity club creates recipe for acceptance

Unity, Kirkwood’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club, is striving for awareness by hosting events on campus.

“GSAs have become more commonplace in both high schools and colleges,” said Teagan Butler, Liberal Arts major and Unity treasurer.

Butler said Unity club members plan events every year that bring self-love, safety and awareness of queer issues to the forefront.

The club hosted a bake sale on Oct. 13 and the group is currently planning a NOH8 photo shoot Oct. 30 in Ballantyne Auditorium. Butler said the NOH8 campaign is a charitable organization that focuses on using photographic silent protests to fight for equal human rights.              Butler also said that before the fall semester ends, Unity would like to host a drag show at Kirkwood. She added that all students are invited to attend the event, even if they do not want to dress up.

The group will also be hosting a gay prom, in honor of students who were never allowed to go to a dance with the person of their choice, explained Butler. She said the dance is open to anyone, whether they want to take someone of the same or opposite gender, or if they just want to relive the prom experience.

Butler added that along with planning events, the members intend for Unity to be a safe, common space for students who never got to feel that kind of safety at home or at school. She explained that the group tries to keep Unity as open to new ideas as possible.

“We want the club to be as much fun for the students as it can be,” said Butler.

Unity meets every Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. in 3062 Cedar Hall.

“Everyone is welcome and will be welcomed,” said Butler.
