It's the great Turkey Trot, Charlie Brown

This year, the Kirkwood Student Nursing Association (KSNA) plans to host its third annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 7. With the profits this year, the students plan to help fund His Hands, a free medical clinic located in Cedar Rapids, and also fund travel to Orlando for a nursing convention.

The KSNA had 35 runners registered as of last Friday and Kirkwood Community College nursing instructor Nicoleta Nica said she expects that the numbers will likely increase to at least 50 participants by 11:59 p.m. on Nov 6, the event deadline for registration.

“People from all over run for Kirkwood,” said Nica. “People who don’t even know each other come together. We have people coming from Bettendorf, Davenport and Moline. Even Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich has gotten in on the action and ran in last year’s event.”

Nica said the race is not just for serious runners either. “The winners last year won in 19 minutes, 24 seconds,” added Nica. “It was two brothers. They’d been training and a lot of people do use the race as an incentive to check their times. But not all people run, some walk and that’s OK, too.”

The Turkey Trot winner gets a turkey, according to Nica. She added that kids who participate get medals and all runners get t-shirts. Also, since in the past, winners have mostly been male, the association is starting a new tradition. “Males tend to run faster and tend to finish the race first, so we give a prize to the first female runner to pass the finish line, as well,” said Nica.

The KSNA tries to make the Turkey Trot an event for many people, even for those who are not interested in sweating in the 5k race, emphasized Nica. Like most events, there is work to be done in the background and volunteers are always needed during the day of the race, she added.

Volunteers can help anywhere from registration to passing out water to race participants. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Nica at

Participants can register by visiting and typing in “KSNA Turkey Trot.”
