The Kirkwood Community College men’s golf team overcame a 13-stroke deficit and stormed back to win the National Preview Tournament at Swan Lake Golf Course in Plymouth, Ind., Oct. 17 - 18.

The last event of the fall schedule was the National Preview at Swan Lake Golf Course in Plymouth, IN. The Eagles finished fourth on day one in this event, which featured seven of the top-10-ranked teams in the country, according to NJCAA Men’s Rankings.

The team dug deep on the second day and improved by 15 strokes to come roaring back to win by just two shots over Parkland College. “This will be a very beneficial experience for the golf team come next spring,” added Pint. “This is the same course the 2016 NJCAA Golf Tournament will be played.”

“I have a great group of solid golfers. Each of these men have taken turns being medalists and they lead each other,” said Head Coach Darin Pint. He added that “It is always fun to see who is going to step forward each day, and with just two strokes separating five men, it is great competition, which makes them all better.”

To have experience facing down the best in the nation, posting a huge comeback win and having a couple days of play on the course will help bolster the team’s confidence and ease player’s nerves, said Pint.

The team has put up some impressive performances, according to the National Junior College Athletic Association. The five-man team has posted scores between 73.5 and 75.8 for each 18-hole set, according to Pint.

Prior to the preview tournament, the team played the Region XI Preview at Lake Panorama ,Oct. 10 - 11. The Eagles were champions of the preview tournament, beating out five of the eight other teams in the region.

The Eagles had a medalist  in the tournament, Dan Cutkomp, who shot a 1-over par for a two-day total of 145. Charlie Hartwig placed third at 149, Jordan Even and Carson Whittington tied for fourth at 153 and Eddie Doyle and Louis Flynn tied for sixth at 154.

The team was dominant, winning the tournament by 29 strokes over the second place team Iowa Central Community College. “We played well the first day, building a 23-stroke lead, but seemed to lose focus on the final day,” said Pint. “The effort was there but something was off.” He added, “This provided a great opportunity to teach the guys that no matter how big the lead, you need to be able to stay focused.”
