Students use J-term to catch up

Kirkwood Community College is offering a 6-week J-term (January term), from Dec. 16 to Jan. 26, which will count toward spring semester credit.

According to Distance Learning Director Dave Hunt, KCC will offer 23 courses. He also stated that students are allowed to take one course. “The classes are more intense and we want to make sure that students have enough time to work on them ,” said Hunt.

According to Hunt, “Some students who know they will have more intense courses in the spring will take one course during the winter so they will have more time during the spring semester. Also, some students take a J-term course to get caught up or get closer to graduation,” he added.

Registration has already begun and the last day to sign up is Dec. 15.  “Since classes are limited to 20 seats, they do get full fast, so students should get registered early,” said Hunt.

The J-term classes are only offered online. Students from Mount Mercy University, Coe College and the University of Iowa are able to register for these classes as well, but will have to apply at Kirkwood in order to participate.

Hunt stated that students who attend four-year insutitons often take J-term courses so they can transfer the credits back to the university they attend.

“As long as students are dedicated and motivated to complete the course, I think it’s a good option,” said Hunt.

Kirkwood offers these courses every year during the winter break. Hunt added that most of the classes that are offered are liberal arts courses.

“My schedule is full and by taking Spanish during the J-term I am able to stay on course to graduate without taking Summer classes,” Shay Hoffman, plant biology.
