Empowering women, children and students

The Power of Women and Children is both a Kirkwood club and a nonprofit organization that meets every other Tuesday in 3059 Cedar Hall during activity hour.

According to the organization’s president, Kirkwood student, Prince R. Nabuyoli, electrical engineering, the charitable institution, which is registered with both the state and federal governments, got its start more than ten years ago in South Africa, where its mission was to teach women the skills, such as learning English and sewing, necessary for self reliance. Nabuyoli stated that many women are forced to resort to prostitution when they cannot support themselves financially by any other means in South Africa, adding that the organization also works to encourage both women and children alike to stay in school.

Nabuyoli went on to state that now that the Power of Women and Children is in the United States, it has continued to  teach self-reliance, this time to immigrants, who are mostly from Africa, by helping them learn how to drive, find jobs and to stay in school, among other things.  He added that he thinks school is a cornerstone for success, and that the Power of Women and Children helps students who otherwise cannot afford the gas money to do so, or who have not yet learned how to drive make it to class by shuttling them back and forth to school.

He also stated that the organization has worked to provide immigrants who are non-native English speakers with English-to-French interpreters. Nabuyoli added that he has witnessed many success stories over the years thanks to the organizations’ efforts. These success stories range from helping immigrants find jobs to helping them finish their English classes.

He said he encourages those who are interested in more information or in getting involved to visit the organization’s website,, or to email him at
