Kirkwood Community College ranked third in nation for Study Abroad programs
Kirkwood Community College (KCC) is thriving to meet students’ needs by providing various local, national and international programs as part of its educational goals. This year, KCC jumped from sixth position to the third in the nation for its study abroad program. Kirkwood’s Study Abroad program began more than 15 years ago by sending fewer than 20 students outside of the United States. In 2016, that number increased to 165 students. From 2008 to 2009, the number of participants sharply decreased from 105 to 88, but the program’s traction has steadily increased anew since 2013.
According to Study Abroad Advisor, Ken Nesbett, Kirkwood not only develops high quality and high impact programs which appeal to wide variety of students, but also supports its students by providing $1,000 to $2,000 Global Advantage Scholarships, which are extremely beneficial for students on a budget.
Currently, KCC offers about 20 Study Abroad programs to more than 15 countries. The program includes courses in culture, business, history, leadership, art and language, global networking and service-learning. The Study Abroad program is classified into short-term and long-term programs. The short-term programs run during Kirkwood’s summer, spring, and winter breaks. Meanwhile, the longer programs last one semester.
Besides opening international opportunities for its students, Kirkwood also offers annual, rotated chances to its faculty and staff to participate in the Study Abroad program as chaperones. Enrollment Record Specialist, Robin Martin, was recently given a chance to join Kirkwood’s Community Development Program in Guatemala. Martin enthusiastically explained her first experience abroad: “I tasted new culture, tried the traditional dress and ate new food.” She added that the Guatemala trip was eye-opening and a moving experience.
Ken Nesbett also stated that the appealing programs, funding options and committed faculty and staff at Kirkwood have not only made its Study Abroad program possible, but have also earned Kirkwood its top-tier ranking nationally. Those interested in studying abroad via Kirkwood are encouraged to visit Nesbett in 1154 Linn Hall, or contact the Study Abroad office at (319) 398-4492.
