America has many Democratic and Republican candidates, with the full potential to choose someone from either side as its next President.

There are Republicans such as Rand Paul, who believes that the United States tax code needs to be reformed by cutting taxes for both the rich and poor. According to RandPaul.com, he believes “real free market principles need to be applied to the American health care system so that it is responsive to family rather than government bureaucracy. Paul supports legal immigration. However, the millions of immigrants crossing the border illegally threatens national security.”

“Likewise, Republican Marco Rubio believes in protecting the ‘sacred’ rights of American gun owners and that the government should stay out of the way of America’s farmers. Like Rand Paul, he wishes to better secure the border and more strongly enforce immigration laws, such as deporting immigrants who overstay their visas”, according to randpaul.com.

Republican Ben Carson’s focus is mainly on how to best deter and respond to regional threats. According to BenCarson.com, “America should make sure our military is fully equipped and authorized to defeat global terrorism.”

Jeb Bush, another Republican presidential candidate, according to mobile.nytimes.com, “likewise believes that American combat forces should not be sent to Iraq to fight the terrorist group ISIS but that they should be trained to identify potential terrorist targets. Bush differs slightly from other Republican candidates in his belief that people in the U.S. illegally should be offered a path to legal status. He has also focused his campaign somewhat on environmental issues, such as the idea that America needs to work with the rest of the world to reduce carbon emissions.”

Donald Trump, perhaps the most infamous of the 2016 election season’s Republican candidates, also holds some of the most conservative and drastic beliefs. “Among other things, Trump wishes to defund Planned Parenthood and cut funding to the Department of Education and Common Core. He also has plans to complete the wall between the U.S. and Mexico and then make Mexico pay for it. Trump said he would allow graduated immigrants to stay in America, however”, according to ontheissues.org.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is running once again for the presidency. According to hillaryclinton.com, “she believes in not just condemning campus sexual assault but working to put a stop to it. In addition, Clinton also wishes to implement an affordable, if not free, cost for college. Deviating from her conservative opponents, she also believes America needs comprehensive immigration reform, with a pathway to citizenship for those who wish to attain it.”

Bernie Sanders, another Democratic candidate, according to ontheissues.com, “believes in breaking up big banks, as well as implementing free mental healthcare options to reduce suicide and homicides. In regards to immigration, Sanders is adamant on dismantling both ‘inhumane’ deportation programs and private detention centers.”

Democratic Mike Huckabee focuses on restoring our role as leader of the Free World. According to Mikehuckabee.com, “As President, I will lead with more clarity in this dangerous world. Huckabee also stands for fighting for America’s farmers by fighting for free and fair trade."

As the American people listen to the debates between candidates and hear all the facts and lies alike, it is important to keep in mind that it is the American citizens who will give their next elected leader power.

Instead of voting at random or going with someone else’s opinion, students should take advantage of their privilege to vote and do so responsibly by keeping up with the candidates. Avoid going to the polls without the rather with a clear idea of who they want to be the country’s spokesperson for the next few years.
