Kirkwood has over 180 clubs and organizations this year. One of the newest, STEM Club, is currently in its second year. STEM Club is a student run club, overseen by professors and instructors in the various fields of science, technology, engineering and math, for which STEM is an acronym. STEM Club meets every other Tuesday of the month during activity hour, and is open to anyone who is interested. “We want to have more diversity, and to let people with different interests come together. Whether you’re in physics or chemistry, all are welcome, including nursing students, or those who aren’t in the field of science or math and are just interested in STEM,” stated President Melissa Breitbach.

The first meeting was held on Feb. 2nd during activity hour in Linn Hall 3126. Members were presented with information on robotics, and on a possible competition being held here at Kirkwood Community College, along with an upcoming bake sale for the club, to which all are welcome. During every meeting, students are presented with new projects, from building robotics to bridges, along with having professors from different departments come in to talk with students about their fields of study. Students are also encouraged to participate in new opportunities happening both on- and off campus, such as summer research programs, and a trip at the end of each year.

The STEM Club will be heading to the Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois for this year’s trip. There, the members of STEM Club will learn from staff members committed to developing a science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce, as well as stimulating scientific literacy. Fermilab caters to students ranging from pre-kindergarten to graduate school, and its themes range from scientific discovery to practical applications along with scientific and engineering practices, according to the Fermilab website.
