Fafsa Frenzy

By Daniel Fields
On February 24, 2016

Excepting the week of spring break, every Tuesday from Feb. 29 to Apr. 26, students can go to 3057 Cedar Hall from 10:30 to noon to receive help with their 2016-2017 FASFA forms, from financial aid professionals, as a part of FAFSA frenzy. FAFSA is an acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid from the Federal Government, to help pay for tuition, books and living expenses. The term financial aid encompasses grants, scholarships, and student loans.

According to Cindi Reints, Financial Aid Advisor, students should come with both their FAFSA ID and password already set up, in order to save time, along with a completed copy of their 2015 taxes. She also stated that early filers have a better chance of receiving grants and scholarships, although Feb. had been a little slow, as expected, with an average of only around 6 students coming in for help. However, Reints said that she expects things to pick up come April, adding that this is the first year FAFSA Frenzy has been allotted three months time instead of just one (prior to this year, it was held only during April).

Reints emphasized that FAFSA Frenzy is not just for Kirkwood students though, and is open to the public. She encouraged students, whether they are attending Kirkwood, another institution or are still in high school, to come in for help, adding that students should bring their parents as well, if at all possible. However, both students and parents alike are welcome to come in on their own, she stated, adding that the mission of FAFSA frenzy is to reach out to people to help them with their Financial Aid applications.
