Eagles win first game at nationals

The Eagles men's basketball team played a bit nervously the entire first half of their opening round game versus Frederick and went into half time trailing, 37-35.

Head Coach Bryan Petersen must have lit a fire under the men in the half time locker room because the Eagles flew in the second half drubbing Frederick 51-24 in the last half of play erasing their sporadic first half performance.

The first half Cristen Wilson scored the majority of 11 points and seemed to be the glue holding the team together.

Josh Meir was a surprising scorer off the bench for the Eagles and contributed 13 points in just 17 minutes of play.

The second half looked like the proficient team that took the floor this season for Kirkwood, with balanced scoring amongst five to seven players.  The second half the balled flowed to many players and the scoring ended with five in double figures and two more just shy.

In addition to Meir and Wilson, Nick Richards scored 13, Da’Rion King and Bryon Harp each scored 11 poits. Al’Tavius Jackson, Hunter Rhoades and Jacob Olson each scored between seven and nine points.

It looks as the Eagles have a great opportunity to make a run with their many options of offensive scoring power and a defense that has been improving all season long.

Eagles will have a very tough game on Wednesday, March 16, at 8 p.m. against Louisburg Community College, who disposed of their first round opponent easily.

Louisburg will be a formidable foe for the Eagles as they have a nearly identical record for the year and seem to be made a lot alike.  Each can score from multiple assets, and each of them have experience against big time competition.

This elite eight game will be an opportunity to be dancing in the final four on Friday.
